Zunino, Meadows homer, Rays beat Red Sox 9-4

BOSTON (AP) — Rookie left-hander Brendan McKay struck out seven, Mike Zunino and Austin Meadows homered, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 9-4 Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep.
It’s the second time Tampa Bay has swept a series of at least three games at Fenway Park. The Rays have won four straight and hold the AL’s final wild card by a half-game over Oakland. Boston fell 3 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay.
The Red Sox lost their fourth straight and fell 10 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Yankees a week after taking three of four against New York in Boston. The suddenly reeling Red Sox limp into a four-game weekend series in the Bronx at 59-51, all but out of contention for a fourth straight AL East title.
Tommy Pham had two RBI singles and Jesús Aguilar singled and scored twice in his debut for the Rays, who picked him up from Milwaukee in a trade before Wednesday’s deadline. Eric Sogard also had two hits for the Rays.
McKay (2-1) got his second win in the majors, holding Boston to three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Xander Bogaerts went 4 for 4 with two homers, and Mookie Betts also homered for the Red Sox.
Boston was 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base. Red Sox starter Andrew Cashner walked five while allowing seven runs in 5 2/3 innings, and Boston’s pitchers combined for eight walks and two wild pitches.
Cashner (10-6) had a 2-1 lead after Bogaerts’ two-run homer in the first but fell apart quickly in the second. He walked Aguilar to start the inning, Sogard followed with a single and Zunino drew another walk to load the bases. Cashner walked in one run, Tampa Bay added another on a passed ball and Pham hit an RBI double to put the Rays up 4-2.
Cashner ran into more trouble in the sixth when Aguilar singled with one out, Sogard doubled to right and Zunino drew a walk to load the bases. Darwinzon Hernández replaced Cashner and threw a wild pitch that allowed Sogard to score from third and another pitch in the dirt that led to another run and a 7-3 lead for the Rays.

Cole extends win streak to 9 games, Astros beat Indians 7-1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Gerrit Cole pitched one-run ball over seven innings and extended his winning streak to a career-best nine games as the Houston Astros beat the Indians 7-1 on Thursday, spoiling the Cleveland debut of Yasiel Puig and the return of Danny Salazar.
Cole (13-5) gave up four hits, all in the first four innings, and struck out four for Houston, which has the best records in the American League at 70-40. The right-handed Cole leads the majors with 216 strikeouts and has not lost since May 22.
Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley and Yordan Alvarez drove in two runs apiece, while George Springer hit his MLB-leading eighth leadoff home run and scored three times. Bregman went 3 for 3 with a solo homer.
Puig doubled off the wall in the fourth and went 1 for 3 with a stolen base in his first game since being acquired from Cincinnati. Franmil Reyes, who came over from San Diego in the same three-team trade, had a single in four at-bats.
Both sluggers received warm ovations each time they batted and after being thrown out at home plate on different plays.
Salazar (0-1) allowed two runs in four innings in his first appearance in the majors since the 2017 AL Division Series. The former All-Star right-hander, who had surgery on his throwing shoulder last July, struck out two and topped out at 88.3 MPH in 66 pitches.
Puig grounded out with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth against Joe Smith. Puig was in the lineup after appealing a three-game suspension for his role in a wild brawl Tuesday between the Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Indians manager Terry Francona missed the game after undergoing an eye operation earlier in the day. Bench coach Brad Mills filled in. A team spokesman said Francona is expected to be back Friday.
Houston’s Yuli Gurriel went 0 for 4 and had his hitting streak snapped at 18 games.
Houston’s Josh Reddick was ejected by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza for throwing his equipment after striking out to end the sixth inning.

Former AL Cy Young Award winner Greinke was acquired from Arizona, while Sanchez and RHP Joe Biagini were dealt by Toronto. Guerrero homers twice, powers Blue Jays past Orioles 11-2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit two of his team’s five home runs to back a solid performance by fellow rookie Trent Thornton and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-2 Thursday night.
Randal Grichuk, Danny Jansen and Billy McKinney also had homered for the Blue Jays, who tied a season high with their fourth straight win. Guerrero’s homers included an impressive 450-foot shot off Dylan Tate in the eighth inning.
Toronto reinstated Thornton (4-7) from the 10-day injured list for elbow inflammation, and he allowed one run and five hits without a walk over six innings. His last two wins have come against the Orioles. Thornton threw six scoreless innings against them July 7.
Trey Mancini hit his 25th home run, a solo shot in the eighth off Toronto reliever Jason Adam, who was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo earlier in the day.
Guerrero gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot in the third off Asher Wojciechowski (2-4). Guerrero is batting .416 (20 of 48) with five homers over his last 12 games.
The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half on two singles and a bunt. Thornton got out of the jam on a pop out and double play. Toronto took a 3-0 lead on a two-out, RBI single by Bo Bichette.
Grichuk hit a solo homer in the fifth that ended Wojciechowski’s night. The Orioles pulled within 4-1 later that inning on a fielder’s choice by Jonathan Villar.
Jansen hit a three-run shot and Guerrero picked up his third RBI with a double off Jimmy Yacabonis in the sixth.
ORIOLES STAY PAT
The rebuilding Orioles were expected to be active at the trade deadline. Instead, executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias decided the best course of action was to keep the current roster intact, especially with key players under contract for next season.
“Our goal is to raise the talent level up and down the organization and that includes players who are on the major league team, and the trades that were available to us, I didn’t feel like they were going to do that,” Elias said. “I thought they might actually lower the talent level because these are guys we have under control.”
MOVES
The Blue Jays added OF Derek Fisher to their major league roster. Fisher was acquired from the Houston Astros ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline for right-handed starter Aaron Sanchez, right-handed reliever Joe Biagini and minor league outfielder Cal Stevenson.
Orioles: INF José Rondón was added to the 25-man roster after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox on Wednesday. He popped out as a pinch hitter in the seventh.

LEADING OFF: Paxton gets Red Sox rematch, May Day in LA

A look at what’s happening around the majors Friday:
NO REINFORCEMENTS
The Yankees came up short trying to acquire pitching help at the trade deadline, and that’s putting more pressure on James Paxton to shake off a rough stretch. The big left-hander is 0-3 with a 6.67 ERA in his past six starts, including a loss at Fenway Park last week when he allowed seven runs in four innings. Paxton (5-6, 4.72) faces the Red Sox again in the opener of a four-game home series. He’ll oppose right-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4, 4.13).
MAY DAY
Top Dodgers pitching prospect Dustin May is expected to make his major league debut against San Diego. The 21-year-old right-hander is nicknamed Gingergaard because his flowing red hair and big-time fastball remind some of Mets ace Noah Syndergaard. May was 6-5 with a 3.38 ERA over 20 starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season.
ENJOY IT
The Tampa Bay Rays will have a rare Friday off before starting a two-game series against Miami on Saturday at Tropicana Field. It will mark the first time in franchise history Tampa Bay has a scheduled idle Friday past the opening week of April.
“That’s odd. I don’t think I’ve ever have had a Friday off,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said before Thursday night’s game at Boston.
Under scheduling guidelines, MLB teams have some leeway regarding a day off before or after a two-game series.
DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS
Madison Bumgarner, who had been the subject of trade speculation, starts for the Giants when they open a series at Coors Field. San Francisco and Colorado are coming off completely opposite performances last month. The Giants began July at 36-47, but finished the month at 55-53. They became the first major league team to start July at least 10 games under .500 and end with a winning mark. The Rockies, meanwhile, were 44-40 heading into July before going 6-19 — that was the worst showing by any team that went into July with a winning record since the 1888 Boston Beaneaters were 5-17.
PHILLING UP
Jason Vargas (6-5, 4.01 ERA) makes his debut with the Phillies after being acquired this week from the Mets. The 36-year-old lefty has won three straight starts going into this outing in Philadelphia against the White Sox.
Packers' new-look defense getting upper hand early in training camp

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers are hoping this is the year — for the first time in nearly a decade — their defense becomes more of an asset than a liability.
Green Bay made it a priority this offseason to upgrade the defense, which hasn’t cracked the top 10 in the league in points or yards allowed in the past eight seasons. The Packers added safety Adrian Amos and pass rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith in free agency, and they used first-round draft picks on outside linebacker Rashan Gary and safety Darnell Savage.
More Packers coverage from FOX Sports Wisconsin
Early in training camp, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s unit is humming. Whether it’s Za’Darius Smith dominating in pass-rush drills or fourth-year linebacker Blake Martinez picking off Aaron Rodgers in the red zone, the defense, for the first time in a long time in Green Bay, is getting the upper hand.
“They’re in their second year with coach Pettine,” Rodgers said. “I think Blake is very comfortable as kind of the quarterback of the defense. We’ve brought in a lot of maturity in that group. … It’s just a different feel on that side of the ball. I feel like there’s a little more juice.”
The last time the Packers had any juice on defense, they won their only Super Bowl of Rodgers’ 11 years as starting quarterback. The 2010 Green Bay defense ranked in the top five in nearly every statistical category and boasted three All-Pros in safeties Charles Woodson and Nick Collins and linebacker Clay Matthews.
Safety Tramon Williams, a Pro Bowler on that Super Bowl-winning team, said he sees a lot of those same characteristics in the rookies on this defense, especially cornerback Ka’Dar Hollman, a sixth-round draft pick.
“He’s a scrappy, strong individual,” said Williams, who is in his 13th training camp. “He wants to get up there and fight with these receivers, and that’s a great thing in this league. Because nowadays that’s what coaches want, that’s what they want to see. They want to see you get in the guy’s face and knock the receivers off their routes and challenge these guys, not give up easy completions.”
Pettine believes the defense this year has more speed, athleticism and pass-rushing talent than in 2018, when his unit ranked 18th in the league in yards allowed. Some holdovers are having strong camps as well, including Martinez and third-year defensive lineman Montravius Adams, whom Pettine called the most improved defender in camp.
“We just feel very comfortable with the depth, just the (players) we brought in — whether it was free agency or draft picks. Anytime you can add either experienced players or young, explosive athletes who have been able to do it in college,” Pettine said. “So, cautiously optimistic, but I have a feeling everybody around the league is right now.”
While new coach Matt LaFleur has been asking for more urgency on offense, Pettine has been pleased with how quickly his players have acclimated to the system.
“As a staff, those of us who are back and then the new additions, the one thing we did in the offseason was we wanted to make sure we cleaned up some of the issues with the scheme and simplified it,” he said. “We have fewer calls this training camp and simplified some things, obviously took some things out. I think that’s helped because the guys we brought in are all football smart. They’ve picked it up quick.”
Realmuto, Arrieta lead Phillies to 10-2 win over Giants

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run homer and fell a triple shy of the cycle, Cesar Hernandez and Roman Quinn also went deep, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 10-2 Thursday.
Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the fifth but was pulled after 71 pitches because of a bone spur in his right elbow. He allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits, striking out five in four-plus innings. Jose Alvarez (2-2) and three relievers tossed five scoreless innings.
Giants starter Dereck Rodriguez (4-6) gave up seven runs — four earned — and eight hits in three innings.
The Phillies (57-51) and Nationals are tied for the top spot in the NL wild-card standings. Both teams will be tied with the loser of the Cubs-Cardinals game later Thursday night.
Brandon Belt and Mike Yastrzemski had RBI singles for the Giants, who climbed into the wild-card race with a 19-6 record in July.
MARLINS 5, TWINS 4, 12 INNINGS
MIAMI (AP) — Newly acquired Minnesota reliever Sam Dyson blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning, then Harold Ramirez hit a leadoff homer in the 12th to make Miami a winner.
Dyson, acquired from San Francisco on Wednesday, faced four batters and didn’t retire any of them, allowing two walks and two hits before being pulled.
The Marlins tied it with three runs, and Ramirez homered in the 12th, connecting off Cody Stashak (0-1) to avert a three-game sweep. Ramirez also doubled home a run in the second.
Max Kepler led off the game with his 30th homer and Byron Buxton drove in two runs with his 30th double for the Twins.
Jeff Brigham (1-0) earned his first career victory with two perfect innings.
CHICAGO (AP) — Zack Wheeler tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, Robinson Canó drove in two runs with a homer and double and New York beat Chicago for its seventh straight win.
Wilson Ramos also drove in a run as the Mets completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox and won their 13th of 17 overall.
Chicago has dropped eight of nine and is 4-16 since the All-Star break.
Wheeler (8-6) struck out seven and walked none in his second start after a 2½-week stint on injured list with shoulder fatigue. Luis Avilán and Jeurys Familia completed the four-hitter.
Rookie Dylan Cease (1-4) allowed four runs, three earned, in seven innings in his fifth and longest start since joining Chicago’s rotation.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Chapman hit a two-run home run off struggling closer Josh Hader (1-5) in the eighth and Oakland beat Milwaukee.
Chad Pinder also went deep and Mark Canha added three hits to help the A’s win their fourth in five games.
Christian Yelich doubled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games for Milwaukee. Mike Moustakas added two hits, and Trent Grisham had a sacrifice fly in his major league debut with the Brewers.
Blake Treinen (6-3) retired three batters to win, and Liam Hendriks pitched the ninth for his 10th save.
Chargers, Rams hold first practice in 2 years without fight

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — The Chargers and Rams took the “Fight for L.A.” slogan literally during a joint practice two years ago. Both coaches were thankful there wasn’t a sequel on Thursday.
“That was a good professional practice,” Lynn said after the two-hour session at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex, which is the Chargers’ training camp base. “It was clean and there were a lot of plays back and forth.”
The teams were involved in three fights during a practice at UC Irvine in 2017 with the most notable being Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen taking down Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman. Allen’s highlight this time was making a diving catch near the Rams’ sideline on a deep ball from Philip Rivers.
Rams safety Eric Weddle, who played for the Chargers from 2007-15, said going against his former club was good, especially a week into training camp.
“They gave us different looks and Philip is one of the best quarterbacks in the league,” Weddle said. “There weren’t any cheap shots or anything you have to worry about. We got great work out of it.”
The practice was also a good early gage to see how the Chargers are coping without running back Melvin Gordon and offensive left tackle Russell Okung. Gordon is holding out for a contract extension while Okung is out indefinitely due to blood clots.
Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson got most of the first team snaps at running back. Both showed some flashes with a couple nice gains after finding openings.
Ekeler, who is going into this third season, said he is getting more reps with the first team but getting the same amount of overall plays during practice.
“It’s still the same plays and reads. It is six running backs in camp, so we have a good rotation,” he said. “Even if he was here, we have same mentality. We still have to move forward.”
Ekeler emerged last season as a good complementary back to Gordon due to his speed and ability to catch it out of the backfield. Jackson did not see much action until late in the season, when Gordon missed three games with a knee injury, but performed well when needed. He got the start in the Week 15 win over Kansas City, gaining 58 yards on 16 carries and scoring a touchdown.
“We’re all trying to expand our game,” Jackson said. “Melvin has been the bell cow and gets a lot of the inside runs. For all of us to get those runs too and more experience, that’s important.”
Lynn said he felt like the offensive line held its own against the Rams, especially Trent Scott, who has been seeing more time at left tackle due to Okung’s injury. Scott and Sam Tevi would be in line to be the two tackles if Okung would not be ready for the Sept. 6 opener against Indianapolis.
“There are some things that we can do once we get into the games to help the young guys that we’re not doing right now,” Lynn said. “Right now, we want to see them struggle a little bit and get better.”
Rams coach Sean McVay said the workouts have come at a perfect time for his team after four sessions of installing their system. They will hold a brief practice on Friday before the two teams meet again at the Rams field at UC Irvine on Saturday.
Ekeler is hoping that cooler heads will continue to prevail.
“I remember coming in two years ago the intensity level was pretty high but today it was pretty chill and just like a normal practice,” he said. “It is great because in training camp there are going to be mistakes. We still can get excited and not have to fight each other.”
No-nonsense Zimmer sends message to Vikings defense early in camp

EAGAN, Minn. — With six players who have been to the Pro Bowl and only one new starter in a well-regarded scheme that has remained largely unchanged entering a sixth season under coach Mike Zimmer, the Minnesota Vikings‘ defense ought to have a lot less work to do in training camp than most units around the league.
Try telling that to the boss.
More Vikings coverage
“We need to play a lot better,” Zimmer said Thursday, delivering an unprompted criticism in a detour from a reporter’s question about the progress of safety Anthony Harris. “The offense has got a lot of grit and fight, and I haven’t seen that much out of the defense yet. That’s my major concern at this point.”
Ever the old-school, no-nonsense coach, Zimmer was clearly attempting to send a message through the media to motivate a group that is as proud, experienced as accomplished as any in the NFL. One week into full-team workouts, with the Sept. 8 opener still more than five weeks away, is hardly time to worry. Or is it?
“As I’ve told a few of them, they’ve been together for quite a while now, and they think they’re pretty good, so maybe we just go out and practice and there’s not the intensity level or whatever we need to do,” Zimmer said. “They’re not making mistakes, because they’ve been in the same defense for six years now, so it’s a little bit of, maybe, complacency? Hey, we’re in the top five in defense every year, blah blah blah.”
The Vikings, for accuracy, ranked sixth, first and ninth in points allowed over the 2016-18 seasons. In yards allowed, they were third, first and fourth, respectively. With only defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson lost from last year’s lineup, and Shamar Stephen expected to take over that spot, the Vikings have the same ingredients in place for another dominant defensive performance.
Sure, safety Harrison Smith, nose tackle Linval Joseph and defensive end Everson Griffen are all in their 30s now, but one year older also means wiser. Defensive end Danielle Hunter, whose natural ability carries the potential for him to be the best player on that side of the ball, is only 24. As for the lack of competition for first team playing time, well, Zimmer wasn’t buying that as a factor in what he has viewed as a relatively lackadaisical approach to the first handful of practices.
“I just think they need to get more competitive. We need to come out here and compete every day. In all the situations, the offense has won every time, so if they want to be great on defense, they’ve got to play with a chip on their shoulder, and I haven’t really seen that yet,” Zimmer said.
The coach’s comments came in the morning, before the full team took the field, and the intensity during drills appeared to be increased. Smith, who along with Joseph, Griffen, linebacker Anthony Barr and cornerback Xavier Rhodes has been in place the whole time Zimmer has been here since his arrival in 2014, had no qualms with the coach’s viewpoint.
“If we want to have an identity, we have to go make that identity. We can’t just show up and think, ‘Oh, we’re good,'” Smith said. “I think what he said is right. I don’t think there’s been a lackadaisical approach. I go back to something he said when he got here about what our attitude was when the defense was, quote, terrible. It’s just the mindset. It’s not that we aren’t out here playing well. There’s maybe an edge that he hasn’t seen that we have to we have to show.”
Smith laughed, then added: “If I took offense to everything Zim said, I wouldn’t have lasted a very long time.”
Brewers Final Pitch: Critical weekend series against rival Cubs up next

We preview the Brewers’ weekend series against the CubsJimmy Garoppolo working on ability to read defenses

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers want Jimmy Garoppolo to improve his ability to read defenses.
Through five training camp practices, Garoppolo has completed only 34 of 62 passes, a sign of rust following almost a year away from football. But, the 49ers aren’t concerned with his accuracy. They like the way he throws a football. He completed 67.4% during his five-game winning streak with the 49ers in 2017.
Instead, the 49ers have focused on Garoppolo’s mental approach.
“Just be consistent,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Garoppolo on Thursday. “Do the same thing over and over. Go through the progressions the same way. Look at plays the same way. Don’t make the same mistake twice. When he does make a mistake, correct it the next day. Get it down before he leaves this building. Just continue to get better.”
These are the 49ers’ coaching points for Garoppolo as he returns from ACL surgery.
Garoppolo was injured Sept. 23. During OTAs and minicamp this offseason, he did not participate in 11-on-11 team drills, because the 49ers’ training staff hadn’t yet cleared him for full contact. But, he did participate in seven-on-seven drills, which allowed him to practice reading coverages and going through progressions.
“I think we have made progress in that area, reading coverages,” Garoppolo said. “Our defense has been giving us a ton of tough looks. It makes us better. During camp, you want it to be competitive like that. It’s good for us.”
Garoppolo didn’t seem to have an issue reading coverages during his first-five starts with the 49ers in 2017. In those games, Shanahan gave Garoppolo a pared-down version of the offensive playbook, because they acquired him midseason at the trade deadline and he didn’t have time to learn every play and formation.
Garoppolo excelled with the abbreviated playbook. His quarterback rating was 96.2 and he got sacked only eight times. But, in 2018, Garoppolo had to learn the 49ers’ entire playbook, and that’s when his issues began. In three games before he tore his ACL, he got sacked 13 times. Some of those sacks were his fault, because he held the ball too long in the pocket. He seemed overwhelmed with information.
Now, Garoppolo wants to simplify his thought-process and focus on the important details. To remind himself to focus, he has written the phrase, “Robot mindset” on his wristband. “It’s a thing I keep in my head just to stay locked in,” he said. “You don’t want to be distracted by the fans or the music. As a quarterback, that’s what you have to do. You have to have a robot mindset.”
At times in camp, Garoppolo’s “robot mindset” has gotten him in trouble. On Tuesday, he laser-focused on wide receiver Richie James before a play and threw him the ball without scanning the field. James was covered, the pass fell incomplete while Trent Taylor was wide open over the middle.
On Thursday, Garoppolo turned his laser-focus to Taylor. On a third-down play, Garoppolo stared down Taylor and telegraphed a pass to him which middle linebacker Fred Warner almost intercepted.
“I have to control him with my eyes more,” Garoppolo explained. “(Warner) made a good play on it. Those are the battles of camp. You want to have those. If the offense or defense was dominating, you’d be worried.”
NOTES: OL Joshua Garnett had surgery to repair a dislocated finger and will miss three weeks. … DL Dee Ford sat out team drills for the second practice in a row with knee tendinitis. … DL DeForest Buckner sat out practice with a mild toe strain.

Academy Award-winning director's son breaks Junior PGA mark

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Jake Beber-Frankel, the 17-year-old son of Academy Award-winning director David Frankel, followed his record 10-under 60 with a 65 on Thursday in the Boys Junior PGA Championship to break the 54-hole mark.
Beber-Frankel, from Miami, had an 18-under 192 total at Keney Park Golf Course to shatter the tournament record of 199 set by Akshay Bhatia in 2017 at the Country Club of St. Albans outside St. Louis.
“I definitely never had to ‘bounce back’ from a 60 before,” said Beber-Frankel, a Stanford commit. “It was a fun experiment to see what happened.”
Canon Claycomb of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was two strokes back after a 68. The 17-year-old Alabama recruit led after each of the first two rounds in the 72-hole event that has featured Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
David Frankel won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for his 1996 film Dear Diary. He later directed “The Devil Wears Prada,” ”Marley & Me” and “Hope Springs” and “The Big Year.” Beber-Frankel’s grandfather, Max Frankel, is a journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 while with The New York Times.
Veteran Dani Alves signs deal with Brazil's Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO (AP) — Veteran Brazilian right back Dani Alves has signed a free transfer deal to play for his boyhood team Sao Paulo FC.
The club announced the move Thursday in a video with the 36-year-old former Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain defender.
Brazilian media reports the deal is valid until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“I could have chosen anywhere to play, but I chose to return to Brazil,” the right-back said.
Alves’s contract with PSG expired in July. The Brazilian said then he would like to remain in European soccer.
The right-back was Brazil’s captain in the latest Copa America title winning campaign. He was also voted by organizers as the best player of the tournament.
Sao Paulo is in fifth position in the Brazilian championship after 12 matches.

Samardzija tosses 6 scoreless, Giants beat Phillies 5-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jeff Samardzija tossed three-hit ball over six scoreless innings, Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval and Kevin Pillar homered in a five-run fifth and the short-handed San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 Wednesday night.
The Giants were down three relievers after a flurry of moves before the trade deadline but Samardzija (8-8) handcuffed Philadelphia for his fifth straight road win.
San Francisco finished July 19-6, the best record in the majors, and gained ground in the NL wild-card standings after entering 2 1/2 games behind.
The Phillies fell a half-game back of Washington for the top spot in the wild-card race and were a half-game behind the Cubs, who could move ahead of the Nationals into the top spot with a win at St. Louis.
Vince Velasquez (3-6) took a three-hitter into the sixth before walking Mike Yastrzemski. Posey then ripped a 2-1 fastball out to left field for only his sixth homer in 273 at-bats this season.
Adam Morgan replaced Velasquez, and Sandoval went deep to right for his 14th homer. Brandon Crawford followed with a single and then Pillar connected, sending his 13th homer out to left to make it 5-0.
Tony Watson replaced Samardzija to start the seventh and walked Bryce Harper before J.T. Realmuto hit a double. But the Phillies only managed one run on Adam Haseley’s RBI groundout.
Reyes Moronta worked the eighth and Will Smith pitched the ninth.
The Giants traded former closer Mark Melancon to Atlanta, left-hander Drew Pomeranz and minor league righty Ray Black to Milwaukee, and righty Sam Dyson to the Twins.
Manager Bruce Bochy joked that Sandoval was available to pitch a couple of innings. The cleanup hitter hasn’t allowed a run in two innings of mop-up duty over the past two seasons.
Velasquez pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third by striking out Yastrzemski and Posey.
MAD BUM STAYS
The Giants kept 2014 World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner even though he’ll be a free agent after the season. Following a recent run of success, the team is contending in Bochy’s final season before retirement.
“He means so much to me,” Bochy said. “To have him here the rest of my tenure here, it’s pretty cool. It makes me feel really good to have him beside me.”
NEW ARRIVALS
Giants: Acquired 2018 All-Star 2B Scooter Gennett from the Reds, INF Mauricio Dubon from the Brewers, OF Joseph McCarthy from the Rays, RHPs Daniel Winkler and Tristan Beck from the Braves and OF Jaylin Davis, RHPs Prelander Berroa and Kai-Wei Teng from the Twins.
Phillies: Acquired OF Corey Dickerson from the Pirates for a player to be named and $250,000 in international signing money, and RHP Dan Straily from Baltimore for cash. Straily was assigned him to Triple-A. Dickerson is hitting .317 this season.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Phillies: RHP David Robertson said he needs season-ending surgery to repair a flexor strain and he’s getting a second opinion to determine if he needs Tommy John surgery for the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
UP NEXT
RHP Dereck Rodriguez (4-5, 4.99 ERA) starts for the Giants, and Jake Arrieta (8-8, 4.51) goes for the Phillies in the series finale Thursday.
Donaldson homers in 10th, lifts Braves over Nationals 5-4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Josh Donaldson homered against Sean Doolittle in the top of the 10th, and the Atlanta Braves pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday to take two of three in the series and pad their NL East lead to 6 1/2 games.
After the Nationals scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, Donaldson swatted a fastball from Doolittle over the center-field wall for his 25th homer of the season.
Adam Duvall homered for the fourth time in five games. Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies and Tyler Flowers also drove in runs for the Braves, who won consecutive series in Washington for the first time since 2013. They also won two of three in late June.
Atlanta got another quality road start from Mike Soroka (10-2), who pitched seven innings and allowed just three hits, including a leadoff homer to Juan Soto in the second.
Washington starter Aníbal Sánchez (6-6) could not keep pace, allowing four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
YANKEES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Romine hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning and New York beat Arizona while the Diamondbacks completed a deal to send ace Zack Greinke to Houston.
The Yankees had been shopping for pitching and may have eyed Greinke ahead of the 4 p.m. trade deadline. The veteran right-hander gave them an impressive firsthand look, striking out seven and pitching five innings of two-run ball. He was in line for the win before Romine’s shot off Yoshihisa Hirano (3-5).
Instead, the 35-year-old Greinke is off to Houston, where he’ll play for a rival AL pennant contender. The Diamondbacks got a quartet of prospects in return.
Adam Ottavino (4-3) got the win with a scoreless inning.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Clint Hurdle and David Bell had little interaction while exchanging lineup cards one day after their teams fought on the field, and the two teams were on good behavior during Cincinnati’s victory over Pittsburgh behind a strong outing from Luis Castillo.
Bell and three Reds, including now-traded Yasiel Puig, were ejected for a ninth-inning brawl during the Pirates‘ 11-4 win on Tuesday night. Four Pirates also were ejected. Major League Baseball was reviewing video of the fight Wednesday and was expected to hand down suspensions over the second fracas between the NL Central rivals this season.
Bell went after Hurdle during the fight and was restrained in a headlock by batting coach Rick Eckstein. Bell repeatedly cursed Hurdle as he left the field. A day later, the two managers didn’t say much while handing lineup cards to the umpires.
Castillo (10-4) gave up six hits and a run over seven innings. Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez homered off rookie Dario Agrazal (2-2), who lasted only 3 2/3 innings.
The two teams aren’t done with each other. They meet again at PNC Park on Aug. 23, and wrap up the season in Pittsburgh Sept. 27-29.
DENVER (AP) — Will Smith hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to break open a scoreless game and lead Los Angeles over Colorado.
Kristopher Negrón also went deep during the rally and Alex Verdugo had four hits. Joe Kelly (5-3) pitched the eighth inning to earn the win.
Rockies starter German Márquez was helped off the field at the start of the seventh inning with what the team said was full-body cramping. The right-hander fanned 10 through six innings.
The Rockies lost because of a bad ninth inning. Closer Wade Davis (1-5) walked Cody Bellinger and gave up a single to Corey Seager with one out. Smith followed with a homer to center, his fifth of the season. Verdugo then singled and Negrón homered for the second straight game.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Freddy Galvis and rookie Bo Bichette hit solo home runs as Toronto completed a three-game sweep over Kansas City.
Bichette hit his first career homer to open the eighth against Royals starter Jakob Junis. Galvis cleared the center field wall with his 16th to open the seventh.
Cavan Biggio followed Bichette’s homer with a double, chasing Junis (6-10). Reliever Kevin McCarthy surrendered a run-scoring double to Teoscar Hernández.
Rookie Jacob Waguespack (2-1) went six innings for his second win in his fourth big-league start. He held the Royals to three hits and one run.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jake Rogers, Brandon Dixon and Gordon Beckham went deep, Daniel Norris picked up his first win since May 12 and Detroit swept the three-game series.
Rogers opened the scoring in the third with his first big league homer.
Dixon and Beckham homered during a five-run eighth inning off Luis García. Dixon — who ended up with four RBIs — had a two-run blast to left-center and Beckham’s was a three-run shot to right center.
Norris (3-8) allowed only three hits over five innings with five strikeouts.
American League home run leader Mike Trout supplied the Angels‘ lone run with a solo shot in the sixth.
Suarez (2-2) didn’t allow a hit the first two innings then surrendered four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.
MIAMI (AP) — Jose Berrios struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings and Minnesota hit three homers in a win over Miami.
Max Kepler hit his 29th homer of the season, Mitch Garver added a three-run shot and Eddie Rosario had a two-run home run as the Twins won for the fifth time in six games.
Berrios (10-5) retired the first 12 batters he faced, including six on strikeouts, before Neil Walker led off the fifth inning with a dribbler down the third-base line. Starlin Castro followed with a base hit to center.
Miami’s Brian Anderson hit a grand slam in the ninth inning for the Marlins.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (4-10) allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Berrios fans 11, Twins hit 3 homers in 7-4 win over Marlins

MIAMI (AP) — Jose Berrios struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings and the Minnesota Twins hit three homers in a 7-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night.
Max Kepler hit his 29th homer of the season, Mitch Garver added a three-run shot and Eddie Rosario had a two-run home run as the Twins won for the fifth time in six games. Minnesota leads the majors with 209 home runs, 16 shy of the club record set in 1963. It was the 32nd time this season the Twins hit at least three homers in a game.
Berrios (10-5) retired the first 12 batters he faced, including six on strikeouts, before Neil Walker led off the fifth inning with a dribbler down the third-base line. Starlin Castro followed with a base hit to center. The 25-year-old right-hander settled in and retired the next nine batters before being lifted with a big lead. He allowed just two hits and didn’t walk a batter while lowering his ERA to 2.80.
Miami’s Brian Anderson hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to cut the Marlins’ deficit to 7-4.
Taylor Rogers came on to strike out the final two batters, earning his 17th save in 22 chances.
Garver’s three-run homer, his 20th, gave the Twins a 3-0 lead in the third.
The Twins added four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Kepler led off with a homer. After Garver singled, Rosario connected for a two-run homer to right field. Marwin Gonzalez doubled to give Minnesota a 7-0 lead.
Anderson’s slam, his second of the season, came off Sean Poppen after the Marlins opened the inning with three straight singles.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (4-10) allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

HIGHLIGHTS: Willie Calhoun puts Texas back on top with 3-Run BombAward-winning director's son shoots 60 in Junior PGA

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Jake Beber-Frankel, the 17-year-old son of Academy Award-winning director David Frankel, shot a 10-under 60 on Wednesday for the lowest score in the history of the Boys Junior PGA Championship.
Beber-Frankel, from Miami, closed with a par on the ninth hole at Keney Park Golf Course, missing a chance to shoot 59.
“I actually thought of a 59 on my 10th or 11th hole,” said Beber-Frankel, a Stanford commit.
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are among the many PGA Tour stars who have played in the event, with Akshay Bhatia setting the previous record of 61 in 2017 at the Country Club of St. Albans outside St. Louis.
Wearing a fluorescent green headband, Beber-Frankel played each nine in 5-under 30. He birdied four of the first five holes.
“I knew right then that it could be a good day,” he said.
He also birdied No. 16. On the second nine, he birdied Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8.
Beber-Frankel was second at 13 under after 36 holes, a stroke behind Canon Claycomb of Bowling Green, Kentucky, with two rounds left. The 17-year-old Claycomb, an Alabama commit, followed his opening 62 with a 64 to break the tournament 36-hole mark.
Coan has slight edge in 4-way Wisconsin QB battle

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — There were two notable absences Wednesday at Wisconsin media day: two-time All-American running back Jonathan Taylor and quarterback Alex Hornibrook.
Taylor’s flight out of Philadelphia was delayed, causing him to miss the team photo, and Hornibrook, who started the past three seasons for the Badgers, transferred to Florida State in March.
Competing to take Hornibrook’s place as the starter will be Jack Coan, Danny Vanden Boom, Chase Wolf and freshman Graham Mertz. The Badgers, who went 8-5 last year, open the season Aug. 30 at South Florida.
Coach Paul Chryst said Coan has a slight edge heading into fall camp as the only quarterback of the four with any meaningful experience at the college level. The junior played in five games last season and went 2-2 in four starts, winning consecutive games to close out the year.
“I thought certainly his last two were his best games,” Chryst said. “I’ve appreciated how he’s gone about it. Experience is great to learn from. I think he’s done all the things he can at taking the steps to try to maximize the opportunity to learn. But Jack’s not a veteran quarterback right now.”
Coan said he’s gained 10-to-15 pounds since last season and is looking forward to competing for the starting job.
“They’re a bunch of great guys,” Coan said of the other three quarterbacks. “Competition just brings out the best in you. so it’s all going to be good.”
Vanden Boom played sparingly in three games last season, and Chryst said Wolf had a good spring. But the most intriguing of the group is Mertz.
Mertz, who grew up in Kansas, was considered one of the top prospects in the 2019 recruiting class, receiving scholarship offers from traditional powers Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State. He chose Wisconsin and even enrolled early in Madison so he could participate in spring practice.
Mertz said he’s excited about trying to secure the starting spot over the next few weeks.
“That’s the nature of competition — it really brings out the best in everyone,” Mertz said. “That’s what I’m excited for. If you sat down and watched our spring ball, the first practice, then you watched the last one, we all grew a ton in every aspect. So I’m excited to see how we come out of this fall camp. It’ll be good times.”
Offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph said he has faith in all four players and said each has the potential to become a starter.
“I don’t remember having four guys where you felt like, ‘Man, OK, I don’t care who’s in that huddle, they can command it, they can communicate, guys trust them, and let’s go,'” Rudolph said. “That’s saying something. I think it started probably with Jack and his approach. He got competition right off the jump. Not only from Chase and Danny but here comes Graham. … I like what’s going on.”
Hornibrook went 26-6 in parts of three seasons as Wisconsin’s starting quarterback, and his .813 winning percentage is the best of any passer in program history, but he struggled at times last season as the Badgers finished with their lowest win total since 2012.
“I think for us to be the best team we can be, we need to obviously have more improved and consistent play at the quarterback spot,” Chryst said.
Jake Rogers hits first homer, Daniel Norris ends skid as Tigers rout Angels 9-1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers earned their first series win in two months despite having two of their clubhouse leaders traded before Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
The Tigers dealt pitcher Shane Greene and outfielder Nicholas Castellanos at the deadline, but got contributions from the rest of the lineup in a 9-1 victory.
Jake Rogers, Brandon Dixon and Gordon Beckham went deep while Daniel Norris picked up his first win since May 12. The Tigers took two of three in a series for the first time since they did that May 27-29 at Baltimore.
“Guys played good baseball. There was a whirlwind of stuff going on today which fortunately our guys hung in there pretty good,” Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. “It was tough seeing Nick and Shane go, but that’s baseball.”
Castellanos was in the lineup batting second as the designated hitter, but was scratched at the last second. Gardenhire said he waiting until the last possible moment to print a lineup card and still had to change it as he was going out to give it to the umpires.
Gardenhire said that was the first time in his long career as a manager he’s had that happen. Then again, rarely have games started right at the trade deadline.
“Normally I am going about my business and someone comes to the dugout and says you have to take a guy out of the lineup but I’ve never been sitting in here waiting to print out my lineup card. That was interesting especially with trying to see what to put on the lineup card,” he said.
Despite the whirlwind of emotions, it didn’t seem to affect the Tigers on the field.
Rogers opened the scoring in the third with his first homer in the majors. The rookie catcher, who was called up on Tuesday, deposited a Jose Suarez fastball over the wall in left for a solo shot.
“I tried to take it all in as much as I could,” Rogers said.
Dixon and Beckham homered during a five-run eighth inning off Luis Garcia. Dixon — who ended up with a career-high four RBIs — had a two-run blast to left-center and Beckham’s was a three-run shot to right center.
Norris (3-8), who had gone 14 starts without a win, allowed only three hits over five innings with five strikeouts. The left-hander wanted to go longer but was experiencing groin cramps during the fifth inning. He was able to complete the frame but Gardenhire didn’t send him out for the sixth.
American League home run leader Mike Trout supplied the Angels’ lone run with a solo shot in the sixth. It is the center fielder’s 35th of the season and a team-record 13th in July. He is the first player to have 13 homers in July since the Yankees’ Hideki Matsui in 2007.
Suarez (2-2) didn’t allow a hit the first two innings before running into trouble. The left-hander surrendered four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.
The Angels won just twice during a seven-game homestand against two of the worst teams in the American League — Baltimore and Detroit.
“We don’t like it. But it’s on us,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “We have to right the ship. We have some pretty good teams coming up on this road trip. We’ve got to right it, quick.”
ANGELS MOVE
The Angels also made a deal at the deadline, acquiring C Max Stassi from Houston for minor-league Rainer Rivas and Raider Uceta.
